1 – The concert for young people, le Petit Bossu by James Wood and Catriona Morrison (created in october 2007)

Audience: around 100 to 150 children per concert
Duration: 50’
Interveners: 3 musicians and 1 actor

Possibility to meet the artists and to present the instruments at the end of the representation.

2 – Composition for educational purposes

By Percussions de Strasbourg and a group of children (CM1–CM2 or college)
Percussions de Strasbourg has encouraged the composition of several works for performance with a group of children (8-12 years) after preparations in the school year.

Preparation of the work by students throughout the year with their teachers and practice with Percussions de Strasbourg (duration to be decided)
Current composition in our repertoire: Soyez prudents by Jean-Pierre Drouet

A composer may also be commissioned for this type of project.

The work is coordinated by:
- The music teacher
- One musician from Percussions de Strasbourg
- A teacher with a DUMI certificate can act as mediator to assist the sessions led by the musician

The musician from Percussions de Strasbourg spends one or two days in the classroom, getting to know the children and the teachers, and presenting the work and its peculiarities. The children subsequently work with the piece throughout the year.

The year may be rounded off with a concert (part 1) with Percussions de Strasbourg (part 2).

3 – PERCUSTRA courses

Audience: adults (around 18 persons); children in certain circumstances
Duration: 5 days, 30 hours
Interveners: 1 musician

What is music initiation?
Above all, this is an educational method proposing a different approach to music, centred on contemporary language. Heartbeat, listening, respiration, phrasing and creation are the basis of this initiation, performing music in a group is the motor. The percussion instruments are nothing more than a means and certainly not an end.
These courses are also intended for teachers.

Programme :

Based on :
* Silence : respiration, listening, being aware of space

* Rhythm : reproducing rhythmic figures, memorising Iranian rhythm cycles, reflexes, rhythm games based on heartbeat, heartbeat, spatialising sounds

* Improvisation : theatre games, performing short musical sequences together

* From reading to group music : learning a code to enable the reading of rhythms and partitions, relating this code to traditional solfège, performing musical pieces (clapping Music, Burundi drums, works of John Cage)

Keywords of the Percustra method
- Knowledge of and approach to contemporary music through percussion
- Technique and knowledge of different percussion instruments (percussion mallets and instruments like the triangle, tambourine and maracas, and presentation of the instruments of Percussions de Strasbourg)
- Listening to and presenting works (discs, partitions, history)
- Relations with other art forms (plastic arts, literature)
- Performance of a group work
- Presentation of pieces prepared during the course (mini-concert).

4 – Activity in a school year by a musician of Percussions de Strasbourg in one class (CM1–CM2 or college)

Audience: no more than 15–20 children
Intervener: 1 musician

Content: general initiation to percussion, rhythm games, approach to contemporary music through percussion, listening to discs.
In principle, the school itself will have to provide the instruments. Percussions de Strasbourg may be able to provide some instruments depending on what’s available.
This activity can be done the year after the composition for educational purposes.

5 – Group music course

Audience: music school students; 12 persons per group
Duration: 30 hours (5 days or several sessions spread throughout the year)
Intervener: 1 musician

This course is intended for music school students. The aim is to allow them to share a musical work with others in a group. Whatever their instrument (percussion, flute, violin, piano), the students can either use their own instrument, a percussion instrument or both.
The music style is contemporary, be that a group composition or a repertoire piece.

The goal of this course is to introduce the students to chamber music.
